About this deal
Tom's Hardware is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. You can also make your own pricing adjustments, the Ryzen 7700, for example, is 5% slower than the 7700X, so reduce the performance shown here from 199 fps to about 190 fps and then recalculate with your updated pricing. Meanwhile, the 7800X3D battled the 13900K to a technical decision in Total War: Warhammer III (552 fps for the 7800X3D to the 13900K's 594 fps), while handily beating the more powerful processor in F1 2022 and Tiny Tina's Wonderland.
AMD has also unlocked the 7800X3D for basic overclocking and undervolting, another advantage over the prior-gen model. The iGPU also doesn't benefit from the 3D V-Cache tech because it resides on the I/O die and can't access the L3 cache, so performance is the same as the regular Ryzen 7000 processors (see more in our X3D iGPU testing).
AMD foreshadowed the arrival of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D when it first unveiled its Ryzen 7000 lineup with a glaring '7800X'-sized hole between the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 9 7900X. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is by no means a bad product, but it is a niche CPU that doesn't make sense from a pure gaming standpoint. AMD reworked the CCX on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D somewhat to improve its energy efficiency compared with other Ryzen 7000-series processors that don’t have the 3D V-Cache.
This is one area that AMD has a notable advantage over Intel, though energy efficiency doesn’t often drive many purchasing decisions. Blender Open Data is a core-heavy workload that isn't as efficiently accelerated by Intel E-cores and as a result the 13600K was just 11% faster in this test, though the 13700K mauled the 7800X3D by a 44% margin. Here's another look at total system power consumption, in Spider-Man the 7800X3D saw total system load hit 339 watts which is a 28% reduction when compared to the 13900K, which is great given the AMD processor was 9% faster. So, if someone who already bought an AM5 CPU, which could have been purchased, AT MOST, 6 months ago, and has over-volted it, and has decided to swap in a 7800X3D.
I began working on computers owned by immediate family members and relatives when I was around 10 years old.
The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a superb follow up to the best gaming processor of the last generation, more than holding it’s own against Intel’s best processor and running in a strong second place against the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D.
